A stroke also affects the mind. About one in three people affected develops depression afterwards, and many struggle with anxiety, irritability or exhaustion – often consequences of the injury to the brain itself, not weakness of character. This can be treated.

In an acute crisis, the helpline Die Dargebotene Hand / La Main Tendue answers around the clock on 143, and the ambulance service on 144. For everything else there are psychiatric services, psychotherapy and counselling centres – on medical prescription, paid by the health insurer.

Family members reach their limits too. There are dedicated counselling services and groups for them – use them before you fall ill yourself.
