A stroke also throws finances into disarray: loss of income, costs for care and aids, questions about pensions. The most important contacts are public: the disability insurance office for pensions, aids and vocational reintegration, the old-age insurance compensation office, supplementary benefits and the helplessness allowance.
Register early with disability insurance – benefits are paid at the earliest six months after registration. In many cantons the social insurance institution runs all these branches under one roof, and the municipal branch offices help with the forms.
For powers of attorney, advance directives, guardianship and disputes with insurers there are the child and adult protection authority, patient organisations and independent legal advice. Social services and Pro Infirmis advise free of charge on budgets and debts.
