A stroke is treated in the first hours in a stroke unit or a stroke centre. Both are certified by the Swiss Stroke Society; stroke centres additionally offer procedures such as thrombectomy. In an emergency the ambulance service decides where to go – call 144.

After the acute phase usually comes inpatient neurological rehabilitation: several weeks of therapy in a rehabilitation clinic, with physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and neuropsychology. The referral goes through the hospital; the health insurer covers the costs on medical prescription and cost approval.

If returning home is not yet possible, transitional care, short-term care or a nursing home come into question. Talk early to the hospital's social service and to your municipality.
